Google + AI: how I increased my visibility with a 24/7 personal assistant

Your business deserves more visibility. So you work on SEO and GEO on your own. A few weeks later, an important page has lost clicks, a competitor has published a comparison, and your business is absent from AI answers. You now have three things to understand, on top of running your business.

1. Define what you actually want to improve

This is where a personal assistant can help: monitor what changes, help you choose the right action and keep a record of what happens afterward. In this article, I show you how to organize this with Hermes, the agent I specialized for SEO and GEO. You can apply the method to your own site.

‘Improve my SEO’ gives an agent far too vague a direction. It may produce a long list of recommendations without understanding which page supports your business. Start by giving it five pieces of information:

  • What you sell and who you sell it to.
  • The action you want from a visitor: a purchase, quote request or signup.
  • The three to five pages that matter most.
  • The competitors your prospects actually compare.
  • The questions those prospects ask before choosing.

For invoicing software aimed at independent professionals, questions might include: ‘How should I manage invoices as a freelancer?’, ‘Which software should I choose for a micro-enterprise?’ or ‘What is the difference between these two solutions?’

You already have a scope: pages, needs and a business goal. Here is a starting instruction:

My goal is to get more qualified inquiries. Here is my site, my priority pages and my competitors. Start by establishing the current situation. For every recommendation, state the affected page, observed signal, proposed action and data you are missing. Limit yourself to two priorities to begin with.

With my agent, you provide this information in Discord during onboarding. The agent summarizes your answers and waits for confirmation before finalizing the automations.

2. Install Hermes on a server that stays available

The system is based on Hermes, the open-source agent from Nous Research. It can use tools, retain context and run scheduled tasks. You can talk to it through Discord, among other channels.

Install it on a VPS : a server you rent that can keep running while your computer is off. The setup has five parts:

  • Hermes to coordinate the work.
  • An AI model to interpret information and respond to you.
  • Collectors and connectors to retrieve facts.
  • A history to compare situations over time.
  • Scheduled tasks to run checks at the right frequency.

You can install Hermes using its official documentation, then build this specialization. You will need to configure access, analysis methods, checks and notification rules.

That is the work I packaged into my SEO agent: a Hermes distribution specialized for SEO/GEO, with collectors, history, automations and diagnostic tools. It installs on your VPS and retains Hermes’ native capabilities: files, browser, terminal, code, memory and additional skills. You can also add compatible MCP servers to connect other tools.

Your agent, your VPS and your data. Your history stays in your environment. Analyses using an external model may send the necessary information to that provider. VPS, AI provider and any paid APIs are separate costs to plan for.

The specialization is ready, but installation with the guide requires configuring accounts, permissions and technical commands. If you prefer to let me handle that stage, a setup option is available on the agent’s page.

3. Connect the data in the right order

Start with your public website, Google Search Console and a few competitors. This already lets you connect technical issues with changes observed in Google.

Search Console provides clicks, impressions, positions and click-through rates to spot pages improving, declining or needing analysis. This connector is optional in my agent. Daily analysis works once access is configured and actually validated. Saving a property ID is not enough: data retrieval must be tested.

Add each source to answer a specific question
SourceWhat it provides
Google Search ConsoleChanges in Google visibility and clicks.
GA4The behaviors and conversions you measure on your site.
URL InspectionThe status reported by Google for strategic pages.
PageSpeed and CrUXPerformance, separating lab tests from available real-world data.
CloudflareObservations about traffic and some crawlers.
SEO/GEO exportsMeasurements you already have in other tools.

My agent can import exports from Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Peec, Otterly or DataForSEO. They are processed locally, normalized and deduplicated, without a new paid call to the provider for that import.

Keys and access files are configured in the designated private area. Keep secrets out of the Discord channel. To prepare your connections, see the guide to connect Search Console and GA4.

4. Protect pages that can already bring you customers

Before looking for new topics, check that important pages stay accessible and usable. A page can work in your browser while having an SEO problem: a noindex directive added after an update, a canonical pointing elsewhere, an incorrect redirect or missing internal links.

Your assistant should compare these elements with their previous state and flag useful changes. My agent includes a critical technical check every four hours. It covers HTTP statuses, HTTPS, robots.txt, sitemaps, indexing directives, titles, H1s, canonicals and internal links.

It can also compare the initial HTML with the JavaScript-rendered version in Chromium. This helps explain what is actually displayed on a React or Next.js site.

A useful alert should look like this. This is an illustrative example:

Your main offer page now contains a noindex directive that was absent at the previous check. This may prevent it from appearing on Google once the directive is processed. Check the page’s SEO settings and the latest site change.

You have a specific page, a dated change and a check to perform. After the fix, request another check and inspect the status reported by Google through URL Inspection if the connector is active. Monitoring should also stay quiet when nothing actionable has changed.

5. Use Search Console to choose your next action

Once the technical side is checked, compare your priority pages across two comparable periods. For example, 28 complete days against the previous 28, with the same filters. Consider seasonality, one-off campaigns and recent data that may still be incomplete.

A page has many impressions but few clicks

First look at the queries, devices and positions involved. A low CTR can come from an unclear title, but also from a low position or results that already answer the question. Ask the agent to check whether the page’s promise matches what people are looking for. Only then prepare a title or description test.

A page is approaching the top positions

Check which questions it answers poorly, which examples are missing and which pages on your site could send it a relevant link. You can ask:

Analyze this page and the available GSC queries. Suggest useful information to add and relevant internal links from my existing content. Explain each suggestion using the observations that support it.

A page is losing clicks

Break down the decline: impressions, CTR, position, country, device and available queries. Also check recent technical and editorial changes. A 50% drop from four clicks to two does not carry the same weight as losing several hundred clicks on a sales page.

My agent looks at volumes before percentages and connects changes to the important pages you defined. You can then choose an action to test with a clear baseline.

6. Work on AI visibility with evidence

Here, GEO means working on your business’s and content’s presence in AI search answers. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant to its AI features. No special markup or additional ‘AI’ file is required. Read the official documentation.

Start by making your information accessible, accurate and useful to someone making a decision. For our invoicing software example, the page should explain who it suits, problems solved, plans and limits, how it works and how it differs from alternatives.

Add your own screenshots, methods or documented results when you have them. Your assistant can examine what is missing and prepare a plan. Product information and evidence must come from facts you can verify.

Also check access for the right crawlers. At OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot is used for search in ChatGPT; GPTBot concerns training. Their settings are independent. OpenAI explains this distinction in its documentation. Request a diagnosis of robots.txt and any infrastructure blocks.

Four observations to keep separate
ObservationWhat it means
AccessA crawler was able to visit your site.
MentionYour brand appears in an answer.
CitationA page on your site is used as a source.
RecommendationYour product is suggested among the options to choose from.

A crawler visit does not demonstrate any of the other three observations. A citation may concern a guide without recommending your product. My agent preserves this distinction using sources, observations and imports actually available. Without usable measurements, the result remains ‘not measured’.

Choose ten specific commercial questions. Test them on engines relevant to your customers and keep the exact question, date, language, identified engine or model, answer and cited sources. Repeat observations under comparable conditions: a single screenshot does not establish a permanent ranking.

Give these observations or GEO exports to the agent for comparison. Cloudflare logs and visits visible in GA4 provide another perspective; they do not count all AI recommendations. See the method to measure your brand’s AI visibility.

7. Turn competitor monitoring into useful decisions

Choose a few direct competitors and relevant pages: offers, categories, comparisons, guides and studies. My agent compares their pages and sitemaps to spot a new offer, strategic page, positioning change or substantially expanded content.

Imagine a competitor publishes a comparison of invoicing methods. Your assistant can help examine the questions covered, evidence provided and needs your own site still addresses poorly. You can then decide to improve an existing page, publish your own experience or monitor the topic.

A new competitor page proves publication. Claiming it is gaining traffic requires more data. The same method applies to news: the agent follows official SEO/GEO sources and examines what an announcement changes for your site. Immediate action, a limited test or simple monitoring.

8. Give your assistant a clear schedule

‘24/7’ comes from an available server and tasks triggered at scheduled times. Each analysis has its own frequency. Here are examples of how my agent works, depending on the configured time zone and enabled connectors:

A schedule suited to each type of check
When?What work?
Every four hoursCritical technical monitoring.
Every morningOfficial news at 7 a.m., competitors at 8 a.m. and GSC analysis at 8:30 a.m. if the connector is enabled.
Monday at 9 a.m.Weekly report with useful facts and priorities.
The first of the month at 10 a.m.A more strategic SEO/GEO review.

The nine automations in the catalog are activated according to their role and configured data. An installation health check also runs every fifteen minutes.

Deterministic checks collect and compare facts. Analyses requiring interpretation use the AI model. Checking everything therefore does not require a model call at every pass.

In your Discord channel, you can then write: ‘explain this drop’, ‘add this competitor’ or ‘prepare an improvement to this page’.

9. Apply an action, then come back to measure

Monitoring becomes useful when it continues after the recommendation. For each change, retain the affected page, starting situation, what changed, actual application date and the metric you want to observe.

For example: you add missing information to a sales page and links from two relevant guides. Confirm the application date to the agent. It can then compare available data after a period appropriate to the traffic volume and type of action.

My agent can classify a result as positive, negative, inconclusive or unmeasurable. An improvement after a change remains an observation: other factors may also have contributed.

You can ask it to prepare the change

With suitable optional access, the agent can prepare WordPress content or a change in your site’s Git repository, including sites deployed on Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.

You request the action, review the content or diff, check the preview and approve the relevant execution. Git production has a separate approval step. Automatic tasks have no silent publishing rights. You decide what goes live.

10. Your plan to get started this week

  1. Day 1: choose your goal, three priority pages, a few competitors and ten customer questions.
  2. Day 2: install the agent on your VPS, connect your AI provider and Discord channel, then check the diagnostics.
  3. Day 3: connect GSC, test access and record the initial baselines.
  4. Day 4: address the most important technical issue, if there is one.
  5. Day 5: choose a content or internal linking improvement based on available data.
  6. Day 6: make the first observations with your AI question set and record the exact answers.
  7. Day 7: confirm the actions applied and set the next measurement period with your assistant.

Adapt this pace to your availability and technical level. The week is about establishing a method. Visibility changes will be assessed later, with enough time and data.

You can build this system around Hermes, connect your tools and develop your own checks. If you want to start with the version I have already specialized for this work, my SEO/GEO assistant packages that preparation.
